The Calhoun County Jail is operated by the Sheriff of Calhoun County. The Calhoun County Commission has the responsibility for funding the operations of the jail. The Commission determines the number of staff and the annual operating budget. The primary function of this institution is the maintenance of those individuals who must be held in custody pending disposition of their respective cases by the Courts. Generally, custody in this institution is not intended to be punitive. Most men and women incarcerated here have not been tried by the Courts and so must be presumed innocent until such time as guilt has been determined by the law. Some of the inmates here have been tried and are sentenced County and/or State inmates. Federal inmates are also housed in this institution. This county jail is a multi-faceted environment. Not only a jail, it has a full kitchen facility which prepares in excess of 400,000 meals per year, a work release center which acts as a temporary employment agency, a drug rehabilitation program, which provides over 4,000 hours of community service annually, a medical facility, and a separate women's wing.
There are three ways that you can make bond for an inmate: Bonding Company–There are several professional bonding companies approved to sign bonds in Calhoun County. Property Bond– Property owners may use property they own or are buying as surety for a bond. Cash bond– A cash bond may posted for an inmate once they have been processed into the jail. The full amount of the bond must be taken to the appropriate court and a certificate of cash bond obtained and returned to the jail.
Appointments for visitation will have to be made in advance by calling 256-241-8032. Every inmate has a visitation list that includes 5 immediate family members; only 4 immediate family members are allowed to visit per session. In order for you to be able to make an appointment to visit you have to be immediate family and on the visitation list. If the inmate you are trying to visit has refused to make their list, you will have to wait until he\she adds your name to their list. Visits are on Monday and Wednesday nights, and on Saturdays and Sundays.
