The first La Crosse County jail was built in 1858 and over the years the location and size of the jail changed to meet the needs of the justice system. As the jail population increased, a decision was made to build a new Law Enforcement building which would provide housing for inmates along with the offices and space for the Sheriff’s Dept., 911 Dispatch, Court System and District Attorney. Staffing for the facilities includes the Captain, six Sergeants, 53 Jailers, a Jail Chaplain, a program coordinator, an Account Clerk and a Jail Receptionist.
During regular business hours (Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) bonds can be posted at the Clerk of Courts office located in room 1200 of the Law Enforcement Center. The Clerk of Courts office will accept cash, money order or a cashiers check. No personal checks are accepted.
Visitors at the main jail must make a reservation to visit. Reservations are made by a phone call to (608) 785-9630 on the day prior to visitation between the hours of 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Visitors are now able to schedule a visit, on the day prior to visitation, via the internet by clicking on the link below.
